DMV Shows Me My Future And It’s Nick Nolte

I am not the kind of person who laughs out loud a lot. Granted, I find humor in a lot of stuff but I generally don’t let out a lot of guffaws. Especially in public when I am walking along all by myself.
During a recent trip to the DMV for a license renewal I took [...]

My Lucky Day and Even Cheaper Than Walmart

So I am walking into the drugstore (Rite Aid – Formerly Eckerd’s) to pick up my generic Zocor prescription (simvastatin) and there is a table set up on the sidewalk with two teens behind it. They are doing a raio station promo and hand me a pass for two people to see the new Will [...]

Running. It Is Not Fun.

It has been quite hot around here lately so after a rain storm in the early evening when it was relatively cool I decided to take a run on a (paved) bike path around a local lake. About 2.5 miles total.
I decided to really vary the speed quite a bit. Sprint, walk, jog, walk,jog, sprint. [...]

What I Ate Yesterday

And The Results Are In…

My blood pressure is 116/74
According to this very detailed but easy to understand blood pressure chart I am as close to “optimal” as I can likely get.  To quote my doctor “It’s much easier to keep it where it needs to be than get it back on track”. He was bemoaning the fact that he [...]

A Plan Begins To Form

All this is tentative but I am starting to see a plan form…
Start date July 1. Commit to 90 days.
- Cut out most sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other obviously bad food choices such as candy bars, ice cream, chocolate etc.
- For most meals I don’t plan to limit quantity but try to cut [...]

Tennis Isn’t Supposed To Be This Hard

One night a week I participate in a Mens tennis cardio-clinic. Let me explain.
I pay a tennis pro to stand in one spot and hit balls to myself and several other pasty white guys for an hour and a half. Note – My instructor is a bit of a sadist. She doesn’t just hit balls [...]

Turn Around and Bend Over

D-day has come and gone. Worst part? My appointment was at 3:15 and I couldn’t eat all day in preparation for my blood work. Did I mention that when I don’t eat I get a headache?
All looks good pending blood work results. 6′0″ and 170. My giblets are ok and whatever the doctor was looking [...]

My BMI (Body Mass Index) – Not Too Shabby

My BMI stands at 23.1 which, for a middle age guy, ain’t too shabby. But then again having your weight under control does not necessarily equal being healthy.
BMI Categories:

Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Check your BMI here. (How’s it looking?)

My pre-diet diet: Day 1

I plan (keyword plan) to log everything I eat for the next 7 days. Again, as a baseline of sorts. Even though I don’t eat a lot in terms of volume. When you have to write it down, it really is painful. Here goes:
Breakfast: Nature Valley granola bar 2-pack and 24 ounces of 1/2 sweet [...]
