Day 38 – 42: I am the cardio King!

10 04 2010

First off you’re probably thinking..”Hey olderguy, you used to post every day and now I get a 5 day entry. What’s up with that? “

Well to my millions of readers, I can only say, I’ve been busy, but here’s the run down.

Day 38: I did Back and Biceps w Ab Ripper. Not as sore as the first time I hit that one but a good pump.

Day 39: Skipped YogaX. Worked all day and then a three hour drive out of state – so there you go.

Day 40:  Legs, Back and Ab ripper on the schedule but I played an hour and a half of singles tennis (that certainly qualifies as the “leg” part of the workout plus core and cardio. AND you’ll be proud to hear that I came back home and did Ab Ripper.

Day 41: KenpoX on deck but I played 2 hours of singles tennis instead. Here is where the Cardio King comes in. While I ultimately lost the match 6-2 and 7-5, I whip the younger guy cardio wise. I play this guy regularly and he almost always beats me but we always have a competitive match with lots of shot variety, good rallies and lots of deuce games. For those who don’t play tennis that equates to a lot of  quick start/stop running – kind of like running wind sprints.

Brag alert: This guy is probably 8-10 years younger and was bent over breathing hard and taking a long time on change-overs. I would be breathing hard after a tough point but not at all winded. A few deep breaths while getting back in position for the next point and I was ready to go.  It was great. Winning would have been better but I could really see a huge improvement in my cardio fitness. (He even commented on my fitness level)

Moral of the story: Even if you don’t see the changes in the mirror that you would like. Understand that your fitness level is improving.

Day 42: Tomorrow is rest or stretch. So it will be Church and then another three hour drive out of state.

UPDATE: I can now confirm that two straight days (total of 3.5 hours) of singles tennis is a legitimate P90X workout substitution. How do I know? Because I can hardly walk today because I am so sore. I guess I really “confused” my muscles.  Tennis must work different muscles than the P90X sessions – but work them out it does.
