Day 84: Swimming is hard

28 05 2010

I decided to give swimming a try as a P90X substitute workout. Part of my plan to develop a post P90X workout plan for the Summer. Let me preface this by saying I am a good swimmer. I was a (Virginia Tech trained) lifeguard and swimming instructor and worked several Summers as an instructor at a 4-H Summer camp so I know swimming.

I had grand plans to put in a good hour of easy laps but I called it quits after about 30 solid minutes. I had forgotten why I never swam competitively – swimming laps is hard. I was alternating between breast stroke, American crawl, side stroke and back stroke. The crawl and the back stroke are a real workout on the arms. Within just a few minutes I could feel the pump in my arms.

While I could easily have laid (lay? Lain?) by the pool and read a book I would have then had to come home and work out in my steamy garage so swimming was a much better option.
